The World's Largest Club: The Parenting Club
By Simon Gornick
The population of the planet at the very moment I am writing is 7,236,057,219 and I can say without any hesitation that many of them have two parents. The Parenting Club population is larger than the population of every country in the world. It's members have a set of shared experiences. It creates friendships, it overcomes animosities and in many ways it's the most fundamental part of the human experience.
Every single day all across the world, there are millions of examples of every parent’s unspoken bond with each other. Most seem ordinary, but they’re all in some way profound.
Here’s one. I was at the park a few days ago here in Los Angeles, watching my eight year old son play on a jungle jim, when I struck up a conversation with a mother of two and one year old daughters. We had a great chat about education and child-rearing, when the mother asked me to look after her one year old while she took her two year old to the bathroom. I watched the one year old play in the sand for about three minutes, and her mother returned. She thanked me and we continued chatting. End of story.
And yet, seen from another perspective, for those three minutes a mother had entrusted her small child to a total stranger. I asked her why. Her first reason was this. “Because you’re a parent, and you know how it is”. Yes, there were other reasons too, but none were as important as the fact that I had a happy, healthy child of my own at the park at the same time. Or in other words, we were part of the same club.
At Guiding Parents, we believe that parents can and should help parents because we’re all in this together. And it’s only together that we can make the world a better place for the people who matter most. Our children. Sign up as a volunteer today.
